Text Portrait Poster Design in Photoshop

In this video, I will show you how to make a poster using a combination of text and image in a few simple steps. We will need an image. It doesn’t matter if it is black and white or colored. Even if you have a color image, you can convert it to black and white for a more dramatic effect. In this way, I opened an image and I will make the edits on this image.

Move to Create a Symmetrical Image

When you open the image, we first need to unlock it from the background. Let’s make it a normal layer by clicking on the lock icon. Then we need to find the middle of our workspace. We can open the ruler feature with Ctrl + R and then I will click on the ruler on the left side to scroll to the middle of the page.

When it comes to the middle of the page, we will see that the ruler here will adjust itself to coincide with the middle. Look, I’m getting closer to the middle of the page. As soon as I get closer, the line here automatically throws itself in the center. This means that we are in the middle of the page. When I raise my hand from the mouse, we draw a line. The purpose of doing this is to separate the page in the middle and therefore try to create a symmetrical effect. Let’s set our image so that if you are using a portrait photo, it’s nose is exactly in the middle. I move the image towards to center.

Remove Background of Portrait

Decoupage the main image while applying this poster work gives better results. In other words, separating it from the background and giving the background black color can give better results. I will do this here. First, I will select the object. You can also choose with the Pen Tool or the Lasso Tool. I will do this using the Select Subject feature that comes with the latest versions of Photoshop for quick selection. I click a selection icon and then click to Select Subject button above. As you can see when I click this button, it automatically separates the object from the background according to its own perception. It also allows us to do a more detailed work by clicking the Select and Mask button.

Since our subject is not decoupage, I will not explain this part in detail. If you select on black from the view options in View and then change the Opacity the value to 100%, it will set the background to completely black. I think it looks nice. It can stay that way. I change the Output to Option with the New Layer with Layer Mask option and click the Ok button. It decoupage the object. When I paint the background with the black color, I will be able to achieve the result I want.

Adding Text to Image

After separating the image from the background, I will select the rectangle tool in the toolbox on the left and draw a rectangle on the right side of the image. Its color can be black. You can adjust it from the field value here. It won’t have a stroke value, so we don’t want any outlines. Let’s throw the rectangle like this, and don’t forget our naming. We should always take time for naming. After adding the black rectangle here, let’s write our text. I’m going to write something like Lorem Ipsum. Let’s write a text with more than one line like this. You can write whatever you want here. I enlarge the font. I do my placement to the right. You can then redo these edits, change texts or positions. You can also change the fonts later. Now you don’t have to find the final a position.

Now I right click on the text. I choose Blending Options, which is the top option. This will open a window. In this window while the top option is still selected, I changed the value of the Advanced Blending, option from 100% to 0%. Then I change the Knockout option from None to Shallow. Then we can close this window by clicking the OK button. Currently the color of the bottom layer of the text is visible. That is, it appears as transparent because when I remove all of them, we will see the background as transparent. But since we need to see the image, we need to combine both the black rectangle we drew behind and the text into a single group. The text is currently selected. By pressing the Ctrl key on the keyboard, I also select the black layer in the background. So we choose both. Then I group them together with Ctrl + G, the G of the word Group. When I make it into a group, we will make the background image visible. Let’s do the group naming. That’s what I just said. You can make any edits by clicking on the text, or you can also resize it by pressing Ctrl + T, activating to transform feature. You can also edit text from the character panel or the Properties panel as if you were editing standard texts.

Convert Photo to Black and White

Now let’s change the background image to black and white to create a more dramatic effect. While the image we have decoupage is selected. I click on this icon at the bottom in the layers panel and select the black and white option. When I select this, the color of the image will change. It will become black and white. Then you can change this black and white ratio by making some adjustments in the properties panel. If the properties panel is not visible to you, you should make sure that the Properties option under the Window menu is checked. When I look at the other options, we can see that there are different black and white ratios. If you wish you can get different results by changing the color combinations below, or you can use the presets.

Hide the Ruler in Photoshop

I will leave it at that. We have a line in the middle. You can either hide this line, which Ctrl + H, the first letter of the word Hide or if you think you don’t need it anymore, you can put it back and drag it back to remove it. This is how designs made of portraits and texts are made.

How to Create More Dramatic Effect

In order to create a slightly different effect, I create a new layer with the black and white feature selectod. Let’s call this layer as shadow I choose the brush tool. Let’s enlarge the brush tool a little while it is black in color. Let’s paint a little from the circles like this, you can determine the rate yourself. Let’s change the color of the background a little to make the image stand out more. If you wish you can also make the background white, you can also prepare designs on white in this way. Of course, you can make these chains according to what you want to create.

Adding Color to Texts and Change the Fonts

Now, I’m going to show you one more little tip. Here, only the parts that you see as text appear on the portrait. Some letters are not visible here. In order to make these letters visible. I choose the color gray from the values here. If you want them to appear as a color, for example, if you want them to appear in a light gray color, if you don’t want them to stand out too much on black then I copy the rectangle we created with Ctrl + J and drag this layer over this background layer. You can also change the color of this layer here, or you can also click on the color you just selected. In this way, it is possible to ensure that the texts that do not coincide with the image are also visible. You can also make an image this way, or you can make a slightly lighter color of black. Again, this will be an effect that completely changes according to what you want. It looks beautiful this way. It also matches the color of the image. By clicking the arrow button, we ensure that invisible techs are also visible.

Let’s try these operations with a ticker character. I think we will get different results with each change. This is how it looks with a ticker character than before. Again, let’s make a small change to the background and make them less visible this time. The result is like this. In this video, we created an alternative design by using photos and text together, blending images and texts.
