Hanging Punctuation: Align Quotes with Optical Margin Alignment in Illustrator

Due to punctuation marks, sometimes imbalances can occur in our designs. Hanging Punctuation is defined as aligning words that are out of alignment due the punctuation marks such as hyphens, exclamation points, quotation marks, with other words. We will analyze this with an example.

In Adobe Illustrator, we first opened the paragraph tab in order to align the words of a sentence with quotation marks. It can also be accessed from the Window menu. To access the paragraph tab, Ctrl + Alt + T on your keyboard. After opening the paragraph tab, we select the sentence containing the punctuation mark and in the paragraph tab, click the icon on the right and select the Roman Hangings Punctuation option. When we select this, as you can see, the quotation mark will be excluded from other words, The words will be aligned. The hanging punctuation feature will remove punctuation marks.
