Export Settings We Need to Know for Transparent Texts

In this video, I will show you how we can export the text we wrote in After Effects, the background transparently, and how we can make these videos usable on other videos.

When you move an image or write an animated text in After Effects, you need to export it with a transparent back to use it on other videos or images. The feature that makes the videos transparent is Alpha. That is we need to output as RGB Alpha when outputting. However, in this way, we can use the videos on other videos. If you don’t use Alpha, the background of your image will appear completely black.

This is the text I prepared and I want to use this text on another video. The video will also be on Premiere. How can we use it in another program, I will show that too. It may appear to have a black background right now. In After Effects, you can set the background color while you create a new composition. This doesn’t mean that there is a solid layer in the background. Look, there is just some text here and the background is completely transparent right now so it doesn’t have any black color. Also follow my mouse cursor. By clicking on this icon, that is the Toggle Transparency Grid icon, we can see whether there is really black color in the background or whether the background is transparent. If square shapes appear in the background, when I press this, it means that this is transparent. When you render with this icon active or inactive both will give the same results.

Now let’s move on to the rendering Part in the top menu, under composition, there is the Add to Render Queue option. When you click on this, the render panel will open and you can make various settings in this panel. Of course, while making these settings, there will be some points that we need to pay attention to, since we want to export them transparently. On the Output Model section, I click on High Quality. Video Output option is active here and under this Video Output area, you will see an area called Channels. I click on RGB and we should be able to select the RGB Alpha option here. Now I click on QuickTime and select Avi. When I select Avi, you will see RGB Alpha selected. We can select it. Even when I select QuickTime again, you will see that it is still selectable. If you want to render transparent, we need to choose RGB Alpha. If QuickTime is selected, it will output with MOV extension. If Avi is selected, it’ll output with Avi extension. I click Okay button. In the output section, I specify when I will save this video. And under which name I will save it. I write video as the name and save it in a folder. I click the Save button. Right now we haven’t started the rendering yet, because I have to click the Render button here. I click the render button and the recording process started.

The rendering is finished. I’m going to switch to Adobe Premiere now. And I want to see if this video is successfully available there. I switch to the Premiere side and I will import the video we just recorded here. I have uploaded the video here. Now I will create a new sequence. It can be 1920 by 1080, and I add a video or photo for the background. It can be both, both have the same logic. I imported the photo here. I am putting it here. We will check if we can export the video and the background really transparent. I am playing the video. And as you can see, we managed to export the background completely transparent, not black. As I have mentioned many times when exporting in After Effects, we must select the RGB + Alpha option. So I can achieve a successful result. I showed you how to render the animations we prepared with transparent backgrounds. No matter which image you transfer these rendered video files to, whichever program you perform is operational. They will appear as transparent.
